Course Overview
This 4-week creative writing course will introduce students to various forms of creative writing and provide the opportunity to develop their own pieces. Each week, students will explore a different genre of writing, building skills in fiction, poetry, memoir writing and drama.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, students will:
Understand and practice different types of creative writing.
Apply techniques such as imagery, dialogue, structure, and tone.
Develop a unique voice and style in their writing.
Revise and polish a piece for submission to a publication or contest.
Week 1: Fiction Writing – Building Characters and Plot
Objectives:
Learn the basics of storytelling: setting, character development, conflict, and plot.
Create original characters and a short story outline.
Week 2: Poetry – Expressing Through Imagery and Sound
Objectives:
Explore various forms of poetry: free verse, haikus, and sonnets.
Practice using imagery, metaphor, and sound to convey emotion.
Week 3: Memoir Writing – Crafting Personal Narratives
Objectives:
Understand the memoir genre and its focus on personal experience.
Practice writing vivid, engaging narratives from real-life events.
Learn to reflect on experiences and draw out meaningful themes.
Week 4: Drama
Objectives:
Learn how playwriting differs from other forms of writing
Write a scene for an original play
Communication
All communication will take place through Google Classroom. I will provide feedback on each assignment, and students are encouraged to ask questions or request additional guidance.
