Course Overview:

This course introduces the principles and practices of positive psychology, the scientific study of what makes life worth living. Through a blend of theory and practical exercises, we will explore the concept of happiness and different approaches to increasing it. Students will learn about existing research and evidence-based strategies for enhancing well-being and fostering flourishing communities. By the end of the course, my hope is that students will have a deeper understanding of how to cultivate a more fulfilling and meaningful life.

 

Week 1: Introduction to Positive Psychology

    • The origin and development of positive psychology

    • Differentiating between traditional psychology and positive psychology

    • Key concepts and theorists in the field

    • The PERMA Model (Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, Accomplishment)


Week 2: Positive Emotions and the Power of Optimism

  • Topics:

    • The science of positive emotions

    • Optimism vs. pessimism: Impact on health and success

    • Broaden-and-Build Theory

    • Values in Action Character Strengths


Week 3: Understanding and Measuring Happiness

  • Topics:

    • Definitions and perspectives on happiness

    • Hedonic vs. eudaimonic well-being

    • Momentary vs. enduring happiness

    • Happiness measurement tools


Week 4: Building Resilience

  • Topics:

    • Defining resilience: What it is and why it matters

    • Strategies for building resilience

    • Growth mindset and its role in resilience


Week 5: Positive Relationships and Social Connections

  • Topics:

    • The role of social connections in well-being

    • Exploring the pillar of positive institutions

    • Strategies for building empathy and compassion in relationships
